England virtually secured their progression through to the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Ghana.

Panama are next up in the final round of Group Stage matches, but Thomas Tuchel’s charges will need to attack with more intensity in this 22:00 BST kick-off at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Will England rediscover their attacking potency against Panama?

After a performance which looked set to kick-start a new, exciting era for England’s national team, a scoreless draw with Ghana has tempered expectations in the country.

Carlos Quieroz’s style of defensive football meshed perfectly with the incredible diligence of the Ghana defence, keeping the Three Lions at arm’s length for the majority of the night in Boston.

Frustration boiled over at times, and England couldn’t muster a knockout punch against the African side.

It was by no means a disaster, with England’s fate well within their own hands. Panama’s defence may attempt to be similarly organised, but they’ll lack the intensity and physicality to stop England as Ghana could.

Tuchel’s side will have a lot of the ball, and the players will know exactly what the German coach wants to see against a deep block. England has the sixth-highest average possession in the tournament thus far, with 65.5%.

With Panama expected to hold a very deep line, England’s movement needs to improve. According to FIFA’s official statistics, Tuchel’s side is ranked third in ‘offers in front’ in relation to movement, with 350, but are ranked 18th in ‘offers in behind’ with 217. Runs in-behind will be vital against the CONCACAF side.

Which markets should you focus on?

England are once again sizable favourites, just as they were against Ghana, so it may well be worth looking at the scoring markets rather than outright results.

Backing England to win @ 1.15 isn’t the money-spinner that you’d hope. Panama are one of just four teams left in the tournament who have yet to score a goal, which also makes the BTTS market a difficult one to negotiate.

Whilst Tuchel may rotate some of his players, especially on the left, it would make the most sense to explore how best to utilise your bet with regards to just how many goals England will score.

Morale took a knock with the draw against Ghana, although the team’s coaching staff were very positive when asked about the team’s performance.

Betway are offering odds of 1.73 on England to score over 2.5 goals, whilst you could realistically hope to win more by going with England to score over 3.5 goals, which has odds of 2.90.

History would be on your side in that particular market, too, with England’s only previous meeting with Panama coming in the 2018 World Cup. England won 6-1 on that occasion with Harry Kane netting a hat-trick.

Coupling England to score over 3.5 goals with Harry Kane to find the net at any time in the match could provide a nice return. Betway are offering odds of 3.10 on such a double coming in, with the implied probability of 32%, making it worth a risk.

Best Predictions for the match

England will be determined to put their midweek blip behind them. They need to rebuild the element of concern that their performance against Croatia had instilled in potential knockout round opponents.

Harry Kane’s impact was limited on Tuesday, as he was restricted to just three touches inside the Ghana penalty area. Panama won’t be able to defend as well as that.

I see maximum value in going with a treble that combines England to score over 3.5 goals, Harry Kane to find the net at any time, and England to win @ 3.10 (Betway).

My alternative pick is Harry Kane to have 3+ shots on target @ 2.75 (Betway). This has an implied probability of 36%, which may sound less than ideal, but Kane’s movement will drag Panama’s defence all over the place. There will be a lot of shooting opportunities.

Key Statistics

  • In six World Cup matches against CONCACAF opponents, England has won three, drawn two and lost one.
  • Panama has played European opponents on three occasions at World Cups, and they have conceded a total of 10 goals.
  • Panama are ranked 10th in the 2026 FIFA World Cup for forced turnovers.
  • A 6-0 victory or better over Panama would give England their highest-ever goal tally in a World Cup Group Stage.

Predicted Lineups and Missing Players

Panama (3-4-2-1): Orlando Mosquera – Cesar Blackman, Jiovany Ramos, Jose Cordoba – Amir Murillo, Carlos Harvey, Cristian Martinez, Andres Andrade – Edgar Barcenas, Tomas Rodriguez – Cecilio Waterman

Panama have no injuries or suspensions

England (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford – Reece James, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Nico O’Reilly – Kobbie Mainoo, Elliot Anderson – Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford – Harry Kane

England have no injuries or suspensions – Declan Rice is still being evaluated for knocks picked up against Croatia and Ghana.

Panama’s defence won’t be able to hold firm against England

Harry Kane and England will have much more joy against Panama than against Ghana. Tuchel will have instructed his players on exactly what to do against a deep block, and Kane is likely to add to his World Cup account.
