Something special happened when 40-year-old James Milner started for Brighton against Brentford on Saturday, 21st February 2026. He beat Gareth Barry’s record for the highest number of Premier League appearances. Astoundingly, it was Milner’s 654th appearance in the Premier League. In his extended career, he’s played for Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool, before his current club Brighton.
In this article, we’ll take a whistlestop tour of Milner’s fantastic career at the top of the football tree. We’ll also outline which other players have lasted the distance in English football. Firstly, we’ll detail those with more than 500 Premier League appearances. We’ll also feature several players who have made even more league appearances than Milner. (Which will remind us that football didn’t begin in the 1992/93 season!)
Milner’s Glittering Career At A Glance
Former England and Barcelona boss Terry Venables gave Milner his professional debut for Leeds United. On 10th November 2002, Milner came on as a substitute against West Ham. Aged just 16 years and 309 days, Milner became the second-youngest player to appear in the Premier League. Few could have predicted he’d still be going strong more than 23 years later!
After a couple of seasons at Leeds, the club’s financial issues forced them to sell Milner to Newcastle. Former England boss Bobby Robson was the manager at the time of the signing. Unfortunately, Newcastle sacked Robson soon after Milner’s Magpies debut at the start of the 2004/05 campaign.
Milner spent just over four seasons at Newcastle. He spent much of the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Aston Villa, however. The only silverware he won with the Magpies was the 2006 Intertoto Cup. Not the most prestigious, perhaps, but he had to wait a while to get his hands on another trophy!
Milner got a permanent move to Aston Villa in August 2008 (when another former England manager, Kevin Keegan, sold him). Furthermore, he got the chance to work with another great manager, Martin O’Neill. Villa came close to landing the League Cup in 2009/10 but lost 2-1 in the final to Manchester United. Then, in August 2010, the Leeds lad moved to Manchester City for around £26 million to work under Italian coach Roberto Mancini. During his five seasons at City, he finally began to accumulate silverware. He won the Premier League in 2011/12 and 2013/14, the FA Cup in 2010/11, and the League Cup in 2013/14.
Milner Blossoms at Anfield
In June 2015, the versatile player moved to the club for whom he eventually made the most Premier League appearances: Liverpool. Aged 29 at the time, the Reds acquired Milner on a free transfer. The Reds’ owner perhaps expected a good couple of seasons from him. Instead, it proved one of the transfer coups of the century, as the evergreen Milner featured for the club for eight seasons. He made an average of 28.75 Premier League appearances per term, adding plenty more in the cups. He added to his haul of honours while at Anfield, with another Premier League title in 2019/20, the FA Cup in 2021/22, the League Cup in 2021/22, and his first Champions League title in 2018/19. His side also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019!

After his time at Liverpool, which included 230 Premier League appearances, Milner moved on a free to Brighton, his current club. He hasn’t appeared as regularly as in previous seasons. But he’s certainly proved he still has the fitness and desire to compete at the highest level, culminating in him recently breaking the Premier League appearance record at the age of 40.
Aside from his exceptional (and very long) club career, Milner also appeared for England 61 times between 2009 and 2016, scoring once.

As you can see, Milner sits atop the table when we tot up the number of Premier League appearances, but this should perhaps be caveated. For instance, a player who features below Milner actually made more top-flight appearances during their career, but some of those occurred before the Premier League came about in the 1992/93 season. Ryan Giggs, for instance, made a total of 672 league appearances for Manchester United, but the first 40 of those were in the old First Division.
All-Time Appearance Records
Similarly, the great goalkeeper Peter Shilton made a total of 848 appearances for various clubs in the old First Division. He didn’t feature in the Premier League (despite joining Wimbledon in the Premier League era as cover for their keeper, Hans Segers and also having stints at Coventry and West Ham in a similar role).
However, he holds the record for league appearances in English football. In total, including games in the lower divisions, Shilton made a total of 1,005 league appearances between 1965 and 1997. The outfield player with the most league games to his name is Tony Ford. His 931 league appearances were spread between various clubs, including Grimsby Town, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Mansfield Town.
Perhaps more pertinently, though, several of the players mentioned above have played many more Premier League minutes than Milner. In fact, on that metric, Milner doesn’t even make it into the top 10! Gareth Barry, David James, Frank Lampard, Ryan Giggs, Gary Speed and Mark Schwarzer were all on the pitch in Premier League matches for more than 45,000 minutes… and (to date) Milner has ‘just’ 40,595 game minutes.
Top 10 players based on all-time Premier League minutes played
| Rank | Player | Premier League Minutes | Games | Started | Goals |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gareth Barry | 54,434 | 653 | 618 | 53 |
| 2 | David James | 51,298 | 572 | 571 | 0 |
| 3 | Frank Lampard | 48,871 | 609 | 546 | 177 |
| 4 | Ryan Giggs | 46,437 | 632 | 522 | 109 |
| 5 | Gary Speed | 46,319 | 535 | 521 | 80 |
| 6 | Mark Schwarzer | 46,181 | 514 | 514 | 0 |
| 7 | Rio Ferdinand | 43,890 | 504 | 492 | 11 |
| 8 | Sol Campbell | 43,321 | 503 | 488 | 20 |
| 9 | Jamie Carragher | 43,267 | 508 | 484 | 3 |
| 10 | John Terry | 41,969 | 492 | 473 | 41 |
For comparison, Milner is 13th in the list and has started just 436 of his 654 games. However, this is not to take anything away from him. He has clearly had a fantastic career. Moreover, he deserves the many plaudits he’s received since breaking the appearance record. The question now is, how long could he go on in the Premier League?
