England’s 2026 World Cup campaign got off to the perfect start with a 4-2 victory over Croatia. Ghana await in the second round of Group Stage matches, and hopes are high for a new-look, attacking England.
The Black Stars, meanwhile, will look to build on a last-gasp 1-0 win over Panama in this 21:00 BST kick-off at Boston Stadium.
Why are England so heavily favoured against Ghana?
England’s swashbuckling attacking performance has made the world sit up and take notice. Few can remember the last time a team with the three lions emblazoned on the shirt attacked with such aggression in a World Cup match.
The nature of their performance against Croatia has heavily impacted the odds. Ghana’s failure to look convincing against Panama has contributed to a market where anything other than an England win is barely being considered.
The concern Ghana will have heading to Foxborough is that in seven matches against European opponents at World Cup tournaments, their record stands at two wins, one draw and four defeats. Defensively, they underperformed against Panama too, allowing the underdogs to record 12 shots and hold 61.8% of the ball according to Opta Analyst.
Ghana can’t allow England to have as much of the ball as they did against Panama on Wednesday. It may have been a misguided tactic in the hope of forcing the CONCACAF side into mistakes and making them pay on the break. A return of just two shots on target for the African side, including their late winner, showed it simply didn’t work.

Which markets should you focus on?
Given the fact that England are such overwhelming favourites against Ghana, it may well be difficult to beat the bookies without looking at alternate markets.
Simply going with an England win @ 1.25 won’t net you much of a profit, which is fine… but there are several ways you can maximise value.
Ghana’s individual talent is a lot better than their performance against Panama showed. Antoine Semenyo finished the Premier League season with 17 goals in 2025/26 and was always a threat in attack. Betway offering odds of 5.50 for Semenyo to score any time is something to think about, especially given England’s defensive frailties (conceding 10 shots and 0.71 xG to Croatia).
You can, of course, go in the other direction and really double down on England’s dominance. Harry Kane is firing on all cylinders, and Betway have him at 4.75 to score two or more goals against Ghana. The numbers are on his side, having scored 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich in 2025/26, as well as boasting four separate major tournament games with 2+ goals.
Turning this into a double with England to win and Kane to score two or more goals, Betway are offering odds of 4.75.
Best Predictions for the match
England arrived at the tournament as the third favourites, but their victory over Croatia has only increased expectations.
England sitting at 1.20 (Betway) to beat Ghana isn’t good enough value. I see more value in going with a double that combines an England win and total England goals over 2.5 at 2.10 (Betway). England’s attacking players are too strong and confident not to punish what is an average Ghana side.
My alternative pick is Kane to score two or more goals at 4.75 (Betway), which may only have an implied probability of 21%, but the way this England team attacks, as well as being impactful from set-pieces, the return is worth the risk.
Key Statistics
- In seven World Cup matches against African opposition, England have never lost.
- In his two appearances against African teams at the World Cup, Kane has scored in both games, with a total of three goals coming against Tunisia and Senegal (2018/2022).
- Ghana’s 1-0 win over Panama was the Black Stars’ first clean sheet in six games, stretching back to October 2025.
- England’s xG of 2.89 against Croatia was their biggest in a tournament match since Opta began indexing the metric in 2018.
- England’s only ever meeting with Ghana finished in a 1-1 draw.
Predicted Lineups and Missing Players
England (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford – Reece James, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Nico O’Reilly – Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice – Jude Bellingham, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford – Harry Kane
England have no injuries or suspensions – Declan Rice is being monitored for hamstring discomfort.
Ghana (4-4-1-1): Lawrence Ati Zigi – Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, Gideon Mensah – Ernest Nuamah, Thomas Partey, Caleb Yirenkyi, Antoine Semenyo – Kamaldeen Sulemana – Jordan Ayew
Ghana have no injuries or suspensions – Thomas Partey’s visa situation allows him to play in the U.S.A and Mexico, but not Canada.
England and Harry Kane will thrive against Ghana
The days of cautious England are gone. Thomas Tuchel has got this team firing to its full attacking potential, and Harry Kane is perhaps the biggest beneficiary of that.
