Professional boxing is hundreds of years old, but it’s as popular today as it has been throughout its rich history.

What’s the secret behind the noble art’s lasting success? It’s exciting, unpredictable, and great fun to follow. History books teach us that anything can happen in this game, so we shouldn’t take anything for granted.

Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as ‘The Greatest of All Time’, but he’s not the only boxer with a legacy. There’s Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard, ‘the Racing Bull’ Jake LaMotta, Pernell ‘Sweetpea’ Whittaker, and countless more.

In this article, former professional boxer, now a sportswriter and coach at Port Glasgow Victoria Boxing Club, Frankie Monkhouse lists his current top five pound-for-pound boxers.

Naoya Inoue

I open with Naoya Inoue, the unbeaten Japanese fighter known as ‘Monster’.

Inoue brings a professional boxing record of 33 wins from as many starts, with 27 victories coming inside the distance. He’s ranked number one in the world at super bantamweight, and features in the most respected pound-for-pound lists.

Naoya is the current IBF, WBC, and WBO world champion at super bantamweight, after collecting major honours at bantamweight, super flyweight, and light flyweight. He continues to move up the divisions, bringing an all-action style and fierce punching power.

Oleksandr Usyk

Arguably the most famous name in modern boxing.

Oleksandr Usyk is a Ukrainian boxer who unified the world titles at cruiserweight, before doing the same at heavyweight.

Usyk’s hit list reads like a who’s who of modern boxing. He has beaten all 25 opponents placed before him. Big names include Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Tony Bellew, and Murat Gassiev.

Usyk has beaten everyone worth beating in the top two divisions, suggesting he may retire sooner rather than later. Until he hangs up those gloves, it’s difficult to see any of the current crop of heavyweight boxers beating him.

Shakur Stevenson

American southpaw boxer Shakur Stevenson has a boxing CV showing 25 wins from 25 appearances. The 29-year-old from Houston, Texas, is the current WBO world super lightweight champion and is ranked number one in the division.

Just 11 stoppage wins in those 25 bouts show Shakur is more comfortable using his skills to win fights and titles, rather than relying on knockout power. A 44% KO ratio supports that. Thankfully, he’s blessed with fast hands, great footwork, and an impressive ring IQ.

Stevenson’s standout win to date was a 12-round points victory over Teofimo Lopez in New York early in 2026. Fans would love to see Stevenson share a ring with Britain’s Adam Azim or American Raymond Muratalla in the coming months.

Jesse Rodriguez

Better known as Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, the 26-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, is another American who dominates the global rankings.

Bam has a 24-0-0 record, with 17 wins coming by way of KO/TKO. The sharp southpaw has already collected multiple versions of the world super flyweight title. He finished 2026 on a stunning run of knockout wins, dealing with six opponents inside the distance.

Comfortable when applying pressure behind a tight guard or using his ringcraft to escape attacks, Jesse is a fighter who seems to have it all. What’s most impressive about this 5’4” boxer is that there seems to be plenty more in the tank, and he’s not yet reached his peak.

David Benavidez

The final name to sneak into my world boxing top-five pound-for-pound list is ‘The Monster’ David Benavidez. The 29-year-old based in Miami, Florida, may carry a common nickname, but he more than lives up to the billing.

Benavidez has a 32-fight perfect record, stopping 26 opponents for an 81% KO ratio. He has concussive power in both hands, and a finisher’s instinct that means he’s not slow in taking opponents out when he has them hurt.

David impressed when scoring recent wins over Anthony Yarde, Gilberto Ramirez, and David Morrell.

If you’d like to see any of these fight modern boxing greats in action, keep an eye on my articles and betting previews at Nostrabet UK, where I cover the biggest and best bouts on the professional circuit.

There’s plenty to get excited about in the weeks and months ahead, with each of the fighters mentioned likely to feature.
